Infographic

Though LGBTQ characters on TV are commonplace today, it has taken nearly 50 years to reach this point. In fact, for the first few decades of television, gayness was virtually nonexistent. Over time, however, as American attitudes evolved, television eventually became friendlier to homosexuals. Today, not only are Queer characters finally developing from broadly-drawn caricatures to three-dimensional characters, they are also appearing in record numbers.

For this assignment, you will create an infographic highlighting the representation of LGBTQ characters—either positively and negatively—on American television. Additionally, in order to provide historical context for this evolution, your timeline should be punctuated with real-life milestones in America's gay rights movement (e.g. the Stonewall riots, the assassination of Harvey Milk, Prop 8).

Note: Infographics are most easily utilized in PowerPoint, but a comparable program, such as Canva or Google Slides, is also acceptable. Additionally, if you are experienced in it, you may also utilize Photoshop or Illustrator. You may also include GIFs or cinemagraphs, if desired.

Requirements:

  • Highlight six programs and/or characters AND at least four historical LGBTQ milestones, clearly indicating the years
  • Incorporate your thesis in the infographic's subheading
  • Include a separate works cited in MLA Style—all data points must have a corresponding source in your works cited
